New wave of protests in Ankara

Protests in Ankara

A taxi emerges from a cloud of tear gas fired by riot policemen.

After a month of relative quietness, a fresh wave of protests, met with renewed Polis violence, has hit Ankara.

The protests against the construction of a new road passing over a protected area in the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) forest have been crushed by the police in spite of the lack of any legal permission to build. This has sparked new protests and new police actions.

After the death of yet another protester in Antakya, more demonstrations have spread throughout the country, always met with violent reactions from the police.
